The demands of memory are heavy.

Memory brings modesty and reassurance. It is necessary to culture, to an understanding of permanence in a changing world, to a possible persistence of the past in the present, a past whose influence lives on. The demands of memory are heavy. Rilke, seeing the Belvedere Torso: «You must change your life.» Times which remember are creative; times which forget fall into excess.
