Epitáfio de um Tirano

Perfeição, dum certo tipo, era o que ele desejava,
E a poesia que ele inventava era fácil de entender;
Ele conhecia a loucura humana como a palma da sua mão,
E estava sempre muito interessado em exércitos e frotas;
Quando ele se ria, senadores respeitáveis desmanchavam-se a rir,
E quando ele chorava as criancinhas morriam nas ruas.

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.
