The poet al-Buḥturī was blatant about the fact that he went whichever way the prevailing wind blew when it came to doctrinal affiliation. In one anecdote, al-Kajjī (d.292/905), citing an early verse of al-Buḥturi, asks him whether that does not effectively show him to be a Muʿtazilite. Al-Buḥturī replies:
"That was my religion in the reign of al-Wāthiq, then I repudiate it in the reign of al-Mutawakkil."

وزعم بعض الحكماء انه وجد فى وصية الفرس: أيها الانسان ليس بينك وبين بلد انت به نسب, فخير البلدان ما وافقك, وخير الدهر ما أصلحك, وخير الناس من نفعك, وخير الماء ما ارواك, وخير الدواب ما حملك, وخير الثياب ما سترك, وخير التجارة ما اربحك, وخير العلم ما هداك, واحسن الحسن ما استحسنته وان كان قبيحًا. وكان يقال, خير الصناعة الخز وخير التجارة البز.

Uns sábios relatam conselhos dos Persas: Gente, não há nada que te ligue à terra onde estiveres. Terra boa é aquela onde a vida te correr bem, o tempo bom é aquele que te for apropriado, as pessoas boas são aquelas que te fizerem bem, a água boa é aquele que te saciar a sede, a montada boa é aquela que te levar onde queres ir, a roupa boa é a que te cobrir, o negócio bom é o que te der lucro, o conhecimento bom é aquele que servir para te guiar, e a beleza é aquilo que tu considerares belo, mesmo que for feio. E relatam também que indústria boa é a da seda e que negócio bom é o do linho.
