Considerações contraditórias sobre milagres

Kazantzakis. "Relato ao 'El Greco'". Tradução minha

The most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen. A few clouds in heaven do come together into the staring shape of one human eye. A tree does stand up in the landscape of a doubtful journey in the exact and elaborate shape of a note of interrogation. I have seen both these things myself in the last few days. Nelson does die in the instant of victory; and a man named Williams does quite accidentally murder a man named Williamson; it sounds like a sort of infanticide. In short, there is in life an element of elfin coincidente which people reckoning on the prosaic may perpetually miss. As it has been well expressed in the paradox of Poe, wisdom should reckon on the unforeseen.

Selanik

Geoffrey Hill. Tradução minha.

I will consider the outnumbering dead:
For they are the husks of what was rich seed.
Now, should they come together to be fed,
They would outstrip the locusts’ covering tide.

Arthur, Elaine, Mordred; they are all gone
Among the raftered galleries of bone.
By the long barrows of Logres they are made one,
And over their city stands the pinnacled corn.

O Salvador perfeito / The perfect Saviour

— Σωτηρία θὰ πεῖ νὰ λυτρωθεῖς ἀπ'ὅλους τοὺς σωτῆρες · αὐτή 'ναι ἡ ἀνώτατη λευτεριά, ἡ πιὸ ἀψηλή, ὅπου μὲ δυσκολία ἀναπνέει ὁ ἄνθρωπος. Ἀντέχεις;

Kazantzakis.

They remained silent for some time beneath the flowering tree, Buddha slowly, compassionately caressing the beloved disciple's hair.
"Salvation means deliverance from all saviours. This is the supreme freedom, the highest, where a man breathes only with difficulty. Do you have the endurance?"
Ananda had bowed his head. He did not speak.
"In other words, now you understand who is the perfect Saviour..."
He fell silent for a moment, but then, twisting between his fingers a blossom which had fallen from the tree: "It is the Savior who shall deliver mankind from salvation."

Tempora labuntur (Ovídio)

Tempora labuntur, tacitisque senescimus annis,
et fugiunt freno non remorante dies.
/Prospera lux oritur: linguis animisque favete;
nunc dicenda bona sunt bona verba die/
Ite, deam læti Fortem celebrate, Quirites:
in Tiberis ripa munera regis habet.
Pars pede, pars etiam celeri decurrite cumba,
nec pudeat potos inde redire domum.
/Lite vacent aures, insanaque protinus absint
jurgia: differ opus, livida turba, tuum./
/Flamma nitore suo templorum verberat aurum,
et tremulum summa spargit in æde jubar./
/Salve, læta dies, meliorque revertere semper,
a populo rerum digna potente coli./
Ferte coronatæ juvenum convivia, lintres,
multaque per medias vina bibantur aquas.

Ovídio. Fasti. Retalho de I.71-88 & VI.771-780.

/Ide felizes, Romanos, celebrai a deusa Sorte
/Salve, dia abençoado, e regressa sempre melhor

«I swear by faith and god’s omnipotence / And by the soul and all its eloquence»

Vis and Ramin then swore no force could sever
The love that bound the two of them forever
Ramin spoke first: «I swear by god, and by
His sovereignty that rules the earth and sky
I swear now by the sun and by the light
The shining moon bestows on us at night
I swear by Venus and by noble Jupiter
I swear by bread and salt and flickering fire
I swear by faith and god’s omnipotence
And by the soul and all its eloquence
That while winds scour the wastelands in the mountains
While waters flow in the rivers and in the fountains
While nights have darkness and streams have fishes
While stars have courses and while souls have wishes
Ramin will not regret his love or break
The binding oath that he and Vis will now make
He will never take another love, or cease
To give his heart exclusively to Vis.»

Vis promises love when Prince Ramin had spoken
And swore his promises will not be broken
She gave him violets then and murmured: «Take
This pretty posy, keep it for my sake
Keep it forever, so that when you see
Fresh violets blooming you’ll remember me
And may the soul that breaks this solemn vow
Darken and droops as these poor flowers do now
Each time I see the spring’s new flowers appear
I will recall the oath we swore to here
May anyone that breaks this oath decay
And wither as fresh flowers do – in a day.»

um poema de John Ash

A Long Encounter

Only the dead don’t know
what heaven's like. For the rest
extrapolation is possible.

To meet someone for the first time
and immediately adore them, as if
they were the sun, would be one instance.

I don’t mean you should fall in love
with this person, simply that when they speak
from the far end of a littered table

you should know you have entered a new country,
and its landscape, architecture and songs
will continue to embrace and fascinate you

through long years. An avenue has opened
and its trees are pricked with lights.
There is nothing you can’t afford, if what

is expended is sympathy. These people
are to be treasured and celebrated
as if each were a public holiday,—

the planting of the first harvest
after a long and terrible voyage,
the construction of the first house in a wilderness.

Atheísmo e Polytheísmo

Athanasius de Alexandria. Κατὰ Εἰδώλων [Contra Gentes]. 38

«polytheism is atheism in the same way that polyarchy is anarchy.»

Tirem o quase. Verbum salutis.

Goethe — Primeira Elegia Romana

Tradução e leitura minhas (do original alemão) da primeira Elegia Romana do Goethe.

E quem me revelará o nome, a janela onde pela primeira vez
Vislumbrarei a doce criatura que me arde e restaura?
E dela me achego e me afasto, e deito o meu tempo a perder.

death cannot harm me
